I made the trek south to Apple Valley where Minneapolis Washburn took on Eastview in a boys basketball game. It was the second game of the day on Dec. 21.
Both teams started the game in man-to-man defense.
Eastview looked to get baskets in transition. They wanted to try to beat Washburn down the floor, but Washburn used their quickness and their athletic ability to run with Eastview.
Washburn’s Kevin Gleason stepped up on the offensive end and was able to knock down some deep three-point shots.
Washburn was able to trap Eastview and turn them over. Washburn created points off of their turnovers.
It took a while for each team to figure out what the other team was doing on offense. That meant that there were many ties and lead changes in the first half.
Washburn’s JoBreil Powell came up with some steals and turned them into points on the offensive end. He did a good job of communicating with his teammates on both ends of the floor.
Marquise Walker for Eastview came up with some nice shots around the basket. He was able to get rebounds and layups on the offensive end. Walker took the ball hard to the basket.
Eastview’s Obi Ibeneme came off the bench and provided an offensive spark plug. He was able to shoot the ball from both inside the three-point line and outside the three-point line as well.
Washburn called a timeout with 8:12 left in the first half, the score was Eastview 18, Washburn 17.
Washburn swung the ball around the three-point line. They wanted to spread the Eastview defense out while taking time off the clock.
Eastview went on run late in the first half. They built a 27-20 lead with 4:30 left in the first half.
Washburn kept running their offense and attacking the basket.
Evan Shepherd took the ball hard to the basket. He was able to hit shots within the three-point line.
At halftime the score was Eastview 32, Washburn 28.
Washburn started with the ball to start the second half. Garvis stepped up and drained a short corner jump shot on the first play of the half.
Washburn seemed to have a lot more energy and enthusiasm at the start of the second half.
Washburn switched between man-to-man and zone defense in the second half. They wanted to try to catch Eastview off guard.
The pace of the game slowed down for a period of time in the second half. Both teams took a lot of time off the clock running their offense.
Eastview called a timeout with 9:50 left in regulation, the score was Eastview 39, Washburn 38.
The score went back and forth in the second half. Neither team went on a run.
Eastview picked up their defense at half court. Then they played mostly man-to-man with under 6:00 to go. Washburn also went to a half court, man-to-man defense.
Eastview called a timeout with 4:28 to go in regulation, the score was Washburn 51, Eastview 48.
Neither team gave up easy baskets throughout the game. The game was close throughout. Neither team gave up. Washburn didn’t bend and neither did Eastview. There were many ties and lead changes late in the contest.
Eastview’s Walker came up with some nice baskets late in the game.
Gleason stepped up and knocked down free throws late in the contest. Gleason stepped up big with his play to keep Washburn in the game.
Washburn came away with the 62-57 victory over Eastview.
The leading scorers for Eastview were Ibeneme with 23, and Walker with 12.
The leading scorers for Washburn were Gleason with 19, Shepherd with 14, and Garvis with 9.
