Benilde St. Margaret’s took on Richfield in a boys’ basketball region semi-final game. The winner either takes on Holy Angels or Minneapolis Washburn. The loser’s season will be over. Benilde came into the game with a 22-5 record and they were ranked number 3 in the state class AAA poll. They had the number one seed in the region. Richfield had a 13-14 record and was seeded number 4 in the region.
The intensity of March Madness was in the air as each of these teams took the court. You could feel the energy from both of these teams. Benilde was able to come out and knock down a couple of quick three point shots. Richfield was able to come right back and hit a few jump shots.
Benilde was able to get hot midway through the first half as they were able to go on a little run. Richfield was not able to slow Benilde down.
Seth Marx provided a spark for Benilde as he was also able get knock down some three point shots. On the offensive end Benilde passed the ball around. They were able to do what they wanted to do on their offensive end. Richfield came out and looked a little scared.
Benilde looked to push the ball up the court in transition. As soon as they got the ball out of the net they were looking to get it up the court. Isaiah Zierdon knocked down a couple three pointers that gave Benilde the emotional edge.
Benilde kept taking it to Richfield in the first half. Richfield didn’t give up in the first half. They kept playing hard.
Benilde was able to shoot and make three point shots. They were able to drop multiple three-point shots at one time.
At halftime the score was Benilde St. Margaret’s 61 and Richfield 39.
As the second half got under way Benilde St. Margaret’s continued to look for every scoring chance that they had. Peter Crawford had a few nice moves to the basket. He was not afraid to shoot the ball whenever he could.
Benilde St. Margaret’s continued to roll in the second half. Richfield played very aggressively throughout the game. Richfield was not able to contain their three point shooters.
Benilde emptied their bench with just little 3 minutes left in regulation. They wanted to get their starters out of the game and have their reserves in.
Benilde St. Margaret’s came away with the 98-71victory over Richfield.
