The Minneapolis De LaSalle Islanders traveled to Minneapolis Patrick Henry high school for a boys basketball matchup. De LaSalle is a private school that is located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. It is a well known school which has had success in boys’ basketball for years. They have won state tournaments in boys’ basketball. Minneapolis Patrick Henry is located in North Minneapolis. Both of these teams have a long basketball history. There has been a rivalry of sorts between these two schools through the years.
De LaSalle entered the game with a 20-3 record and they were ranked number 5 in the state in class 3A. Henry came in with a 15-9 record.
As the game started Henry looked to spread the floor from the beginning. They wanted to try to keep De LaSalle from getting the ball. They took their time with the ball and they were holding the ball that made De LaSalle come out and guard them.
Jordan Hughes looked to get the ball for Henry. Hughes looked to get his teammates involved early in the contest.
Henry took an early 12-2 lead with 14:53 reaming in the first half. Henry’s August Fleming came out on first as he scored 10 of their 12 points.
De LaSalle ran their four motion set on the offense end. They wanted all of their players to cut and pass on the offence. No one was supposed to be stagnant in their offensive system. Henry did a good job of getting them out of their rhythm early on in the first half.
De LaSalle did make a comeback and fought hard in the first half. Henry was a little quicker. De LaSalle did go on a run with about 7:00 left in the first half. They came awake and they were able to put points on the board quickly. Henry was not able to respond.
The score was tied at 25 with 5:00 left to go in the first half.
Louis Cox for Henry was able to knock down some nice three point shots throughout the first half.
Both teams played very aggressively in the first half. Neither team gave up.
At halftime the score was Patrick Henry 38 and Henry 36. Jordan Hughes had 13 points at half time.
As the second half got underway both teams played with a lot of intensity. Henry came out and played strong man-to-man defense to begin the second half. They were able to contain De LaSalle early in the second half.
Henry played aggressively. They were not afraid to back down to this De LaSalle team. Henry looked to get the ball into Jordan Hughes and August Fleming’s hands. They were on fire. They were able to score from anywhere on the court. They were also not afraid to pass up shots if they were not open.
De LaSalle continued to push the ball up the court and they kept on looking for points in transition.
Both teams really battled hard. Jordan Hughes had a really good night as he caught fire in the second half and played very well. He carried his team on the offensive end.
This game came down to the very end. With 5 seconds left to go Jalen Jaspers nailed a two point shot to tie the game and bring it into overtime tied at 79.
In the overtime period the ball was like a hot potato as neither team was able to hang on to it in the early goings of the overtime period.
Louis Scott got hot in the overtime for Henry. He was able to come up big and knock down some two point shots. Henry was able to come away with the 94-88 overtime victory over De LaSalle.
De LaSalle was led in scoring by Jonah Travis who ended with 28 points. Jalen Jaspers scored 21 points for De LaSalle.
Jordan Hughes scored 33 points for Henry. He was the leader on the court for Henry in this game. He played very good defense and was able to find his shot early on.
