The Northern Freeze took on Goodhue in the semifinal of the Minnesota State High School League girls’ state tournament at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. They came in with an undefeated 28-0 record. Players from Northern Freeze are part of Marshall County Central, which includes Tri-County and Karlstad. Goodhue had a record of 24-7 coming into the semifinal game.
The game started out at a frantic pace. Both teams looked like they were very nervous. Neither team looked comfortable shooting in this type of arena.
Northern Freeze started the game in a zone defense. Goodhue got an early lead on the Freeze.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball. Neither team seemed to get into a flow of the game. Goodhue was able to go on a run in the middle of the half. The Northern Freeze was frozen as they went cold from the field. They were not able to make a shot for a period of time in the first half.
Keylee Davidson and Lisza Hoglo for the Freeze were the two scorers throughout the first half.
The first half started out very slow. Neither team was able to make shots they put up in the first half.
At half time the score was Goodhue 28 and Northern Freeze 19.
As the second half got underway both teams came out playing very aggressively. Goodhue was able to make shots that they were putting up.
Goodhue used a balanced scoring attack throughout the game. They didn’t just look to one person to do all of their scoring. It was a total team effort.
The Northern Freeze went on a run. They were able to control the tempo for a while. They used a full court press and that was able to bother Goodhue.
For the Northern Freeze Liza Hoglo played really well. She was able to find her shot and she did a really good job of letting her teammates know where they belonged on the floor. She was looked to score on the offensive end.
Both teams pushed the ball late in the game. Both teams used the long crosscourt passes to get the ball up the court.
Goodhue was able to come away with the 51-44 victory over Northern Freeze.
The leading scores for Northern Freeze were MacKinzie Magner with 12 points and Liza Hoglo with 19 points.
The leading scores for Goodhue were Laura Watson with13 points and Grace Majerus with 10 points.
After the game I was able to talk with Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme about the semifinal victory.
