Minneapolis Washburn went up against Maranatha Christian Academy in a boys basketball game on Jan. 11.
Both teams got off to a quick start as they each raced up and down the floor looking to score baskets in transition.
Maranatha got out to a quick 9-4 lead with 15:30 left in the first half.
Washburn swung the ball around the three-point line. Washburn’s Quinton Garvis was able to knock down some deep three-point shots. If he didn’t think that he had a good shot however he was not afraid to pass it to his teammates. His teammate Kevin Gleason did a good job of bringing the ball down the floor and taking it hard to the basket.
The score was tied at 13 with just under 13:00 to go.
Maranatha’s Jeremiah Hanson knocked down some big shots for his team in the first half. His teammates knew where he was on the floor, and they were able to get him the ball and he took it to the basket and was able to score. His teammate Josh Goldschmidt came up with some steals and was able to score baskets off the steals. Goldschmidt was also fouled and made his free throws.
Neither team went on a run in the first half.
At halftime the score was Maranatha Christian Academy 41, Washburn 36.
As the second half got underway the score continued to go back and forth. Neither team gave up any easy looks at the basket.
Washburn was able to create steals on the defensive end and turn them into fast break baskets.
Hanson continued to step up big in the second half as he took the ball hard to the basket. He was not afraid of contact while he was going to the basket.
Washburn’s DeAngelo Pruitt-Cooper did a good job of bringing down rebounds on both ends of the floor. On the offensive end he was able to power the ball back up and make a tough shot. On the defensive rebounds he kicked it out to his teammate so they could push the ball down the floor in transition.
The score continued to go back and forth in the second half. There were many ties and lead changes in the last 4:00 of the game.
The game was tied at 67 at the end of regulation.
Washburn’s Even Shepherd came up with some big shots throughout the game. He got into a shooting rhythm midway through the second half and that carried over into the overtime period.
The score went back and forth in the overtime period. Both teams fought hard throughout the contest.
Washburn came away with the 74-71 victory over Maranatha.
The leading scorers for Maranatha was Hanson with 29 points. The leading scorers for Washburn were Jones and Garvis each with 23 points.
