WISCONSIN TOOK ON MINNESOTA IN A WOMENS BASKETBALL GAME

On Jan. 23 the Wisconsin Badgers went up against the University of Minnesota at Williams Arena.
 
Going into the game the Wisconsin had an overall record of 9-8 and were 2-3 in the Big Ten. Minnesota had an overall record of 12-7 and were 1-4 in the Big Ten.
 
Both teams worked the ball around the three-point line early in the contest. Both defenses were like glue as there were a lot of contact on screens. Minnesota started out in a man-to-man defense.
 
Wisconsin switched be man-to-man and zone defense.
 
Wisconsin’s Nicole Bauman came up with some nice three-point shots.
 
There was a media timeout with 13:25 left in the first half. The score was Wisconsin 13, Minnesota 8.
 
Minnesota did a good job of bringing the ball down the floor and getting everyone involved in the offense.
 
There was a media timeout with 11:46 left in the first half. The score was Wisconsin 16, Minnesota 10.
 
Minnesota’s Micaella Riche was able to make layups after her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball inside.
 
Wisconsin’s Morgan Paige had a nice mid-range game. She was able to hit her jump shots. Even when the Gophers tried to get a hand in her face she was still able to hit shots consistently in the first half.
 
There was a media timeout with 7:51 left in the first half. The score was Wisconsin 22, Minnesota 17.
 
Minnesota looked to trap and was able to create steals and jump balls.
 
Minnesota’s Rachel Banham got hot with just under 7:00 left in the first half. She was able to get to the basket and knock down mid-range jumpers.
 
At the final media timeout with 1:24 left in the first half the score was Wisconsin 28, Minnesota 23.
 
As the first half came to the close both teams kept up the defensive pressure.
 
At halftime the score was Wisconsin 29, Minnesota 23.
 
Minnesota continued to push the ball down the floor to start the second half on the offensive end. On defense they did a really good job of getting their hand in their defenders face as that made it difficult for Wisconsin to get a good shot off.
 
There was a media timeout with 15:41 left in the second half. The score was Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 30.
 
Neither team went on a run in the second half. There were many ties and lead changes throughout the second half.
 
Minnesota’s Amanda’s Zahui hit layups with ease in the second half. She was hard to stop.
 
There was a media timeout with 10:29 left in regulation. The score was Minnesota 36, Wisconsin 35.
 
Both teams were aggressive on getting to the basket on the offensive end and both teams did let the other team get open looks. The defensive pressure didn’t bother either team.
 
Minnesota’s Kayla Hirt made her jump shots down the stretch.
 
There was a media timeout with 6:55 left in regulation. The score was Minnesota 47, Wisconsin 42.
 
Both teams looked to take a lot of time off the 30 second shot clock. They would look for their shot with just under 10 seconds left in the shot clock.
 
There was a media timeout with 3:28 left in regulation. The score was Minnesota 56, Wisconsin 47.
 
Both Riche and Banham played well for the Gophers. They provided an offensive spark as they stepped up and were able to hit mid-range jump shots throughout the game.
 
There was a media timeout with 2:30 left in regulation. The score was Minnesota 56, Wisconsin 49.  
 
Both teams played well throughout the game. Minnesota came away with the 64-53 victory over Wisconsin.
 
As a team Wisconsin shot 21-57 from the field that included going 6-22 from behind the three-point line. They were 5-6 from the free throw line. As a team they brought down 33 total rebounds 21 on the defensive end. They were lead in scoring by Morgan Paige with 13 points, and Nicole Bauman with 11 points.
 
Minnesota shot 28-58 from the field as a team. That included going 4-9 from behind the three-point line. They were 4-6 from the free throw line. As a team they brought down 35 total rebounds 24 of them on the defensive end. They were lead in scoring by Banham with 19 points Riche with 15 points, Shayne Mullaney with 11 points and Hirt with 10 points.
 
After the game Minnesota’s head coach Pam Borton, Banham and Riche talked about the game.
