On Dec. 12, Holy Angels and Cristo Rey Jesuit high schools went up against each other in a boys’ basketball game.
It took a while for both teams to get into an offensive shooting rhythm.
Cristo Rey pushed the ball down the floor as they looked to control the tempo early. Cristo Rey’s James Sommer came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.
Holy Angels struggled to shoot the early. Even though they struggled shooting the ball they kept attacking the basket.
Cristo Rey pushed the ball down the floor and was able to get everyone involved in the offense.
Cristo Rey called a timeout with 11:26 left in the first half. The score was Cristo Rey 14, Holy Angels 7.
Holy Angels attacked the basket and looked for their shot to drop in the first half. Holy Angels went to a full court press as they wanted to create confusion on the defensive end.
Holy Angels Emmett Johnson was all over the floor. On the offensive end Johnson was able to make mid-range jump shots and layups.
Holy Angels Bryce Boyd came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. On the defensive end of the floor he was able to guard the guy that he was guarding and made him take long shots.
Cristo Rey called a timeout with 4:29 left in the first half. The score was Cristo Rey 26, Holy Angels 17.
Holy Angels stepped up and knocked down three-point shots. They also rebounded the ball and took it strong to the basket.
Cristo Rey’s James Sommer stepped up and knocked down deep 3-point shots.
Cristo Rey looked to take time off the clock late in the first half as they passed the ball around the three-point line.
At halftime the score was Cristo Rey 37, Holy Angels 27.
As the second half got underway Cristo Rey continued to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.
Cristo Rey’s James Sommer, Derek Burgess, Eric Burgess and Jumari Funches all came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. The defense had a hard time slowing them down.
Holy Angels kept on attacking the basket throughout the second half. They passed the ball around the 3-point line and got the ball into the hands of Matt Banovetz, Bruce Boyd, and Emmett Johnson. Banvetz, Boyd and Johnson call came up with mid-range jump shots and layups.
Cristo Rey continued to pass the ball around the three-point line and looked to get the ball inside and take layups.
Holy Angels started out slow, but they were able to chip away at the deficit throughout the game.
Cristo Rey called a timeout with 7:55 left in regulation. The score was Cristo Rey 56, Holy Angels 50.
The Cristo Rey offense went cold after the timeout. Holy Angels kept attacking the basket and came up with their shots.
The score went back and forth late in the game. Neither team gave up and uncontested shot.
Holy Angels took the lead with just under 5:00 left in regulation.
Holy Angels called a timeout with 3:31 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 63, Cristo Rey 58.
There were multiple ties and lead changes late in the game.
Cristo Rey called a timeout with 2:01 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 67, Cristo Rey 60.
Both teams played hard throughout the game. Holy Angels got the lead late in the game. The Cristo Rey offense slowed down late in the game as well. Cristo Rey was not able to make shots down the stretch.
Holy Angels came away with the 69-60 victory over Cristo Rey.
The leading scorers for Cristo Rey were James Sommer with 16 points, Derek Burgess with 15 points and Eric Burgess with 14 points.
The leading scorers for Holy Angels were Matt Banovetz with 22 points, Emmet Johnson with 15 points and Bryce Boyd with 11 points.
