On Dec. 18, Minnesota State University went up against Concordia St. Paul University in a women’s basketball game at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia St. Paul.
Concordia looked to push the ball down the floor and swing the ball around the 3-point line. They got everyone involved in the offense early.
Minnesota State got everyone in the offense early. They swing the ball around the 3-point line and looked to get the ball inside to Kristin Klizke. Kitzke came up with layups in the low post.
There were multiple ties and lead changes in the first quarter. Neither team went on a large run. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls.
Concordia used a zone defense to start. That made Minnesota State shoot 3-point shots.
Minnesota State called a timeout with 5:32 left in the first quarter. The score was Concordia 12, Minnesota State 11.
Concordia’s Danielle Schaub came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first quarter. The defense couldn’t slow her down. She knew where her teammates were always on the floor. Teammate Sydney Weiekrke also came up with deep 3-point shots and layups.
Minnesota State’s Tayla Stuttley and Taylor Drost also came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first quarter.
Minnesota looked to get steals and come up with layups.
After one quarter of play, the score was Concordia 27, Minnesota State 26.
As the second quarter got underway the score continued to go back and forth between these two teams.
Minnesota State’s Maddy Olson came up with steals on the defensive end and turned them into layups on the offensive end. She dove on the floor after loose balls on both ends of the floor.
Concordia did a good job of moving the ball down the floor and getting everyone involved in the offensive end. Concordia was very active vocally on both ends of the floor.
There was a media timeout with 4:50 left in the second quarter. The score was Concordia 39, Minnesota State 34.
Drost and Stuttley came kept on coming up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the second quarter.
Schaub came off screens and made mid-range jump shots and layups. She was able to get past her defender and get to the basket.
Concordia called a timeout with 52.9 seconds left in the second quarter. The score was Concordia 45, Minnesota State 38.
Both teams continued to look for their shots late in the second quarter.
At halftime, the score was Concordia 45, Minnesota State 40.
As the third quarter got underway Minnesota State looked to step up their defensive pressure. They wanted to make it difficult for Concordia to get open looks at the basket.
Schaub kept on coming up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the third quarter. She kept on attacking the basket and making her shots.
There was a media timeout with 4:59 left in the third quarter. The score was Concordia 58, Minnesota State 50.
Minnesota State continued to push the ball down the floor and looked to score baskets in transition.
After three quarters of play, the score was Concordia 71, Minnesota State 59.
As the fourth quarter got underway Concordia kept the defensive pressure on Minnesota State. Minnesota State had a difficult time shooting the ball and Concordia used that to their advantage as they came up with mid-range jump shots and layups late in the game.
Drost continued to come up with layups as she was able to hit some big shots late in the game.
Concordia called a timeout with 4:51 left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 77, Minnesota State 69.
Minnesota State kept attacking the basket late in the fourth quarter. They looked to get the ball into the hands of Klitzke. Also, Rachel Shumski came up with mid-range jump shots and layups.
There was a media timeout with 4:05 left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 77, Minnesota State 71.
The game came down to the wire. Both teams continued to attack the basket and make shots.
Concordia called a timeout with 59.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The score was tied at 79.
Concordia looked to take as much time off the clock as they could late in the quarter before shooting the ball. Riley Wheatcraft stepped up and knocked down a clutch 3-point shot.
Minnesota State called a timeout with 6.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 82, Minnesota State 79.
Minnesota State’s Kirstin Klitzke attempted a desperation 3-point shot but the came up short.
Concordia came away with the 82-79 victory over Minnesota State.
Minnesota State was led in scoring by Klitzke with 18 points, Shumski with 14 points and Drost with 13 points.
Concordia was led in scoring by Wheatcraft with 31 points, Schaub with 22 points and Wentland with 13 points.
