SOUTH CAROLINA WENT UP AGAINST LIBERTY IN A WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 21, South Carolina took on Liberty in a women’s basketball game at the University of Minnesota as part of the 2014 Subway Classic.

South Carolina looked to take a lot of time off the clock early. They swung the ball around the 3-point line as they looked to make layups in their offense.

Liberty guard Sadalia Ellis did a good job of bringing the ball down the floor and was able to get her teammates involved in the offense.

There was a media timeout with 15:58 left in the first half. The score was South Carolina 7, Liberty 4.

South Carolina’s Tiffany Mitchell came up with mid-range jump shots in the first half. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.

Liberty’s post player Katelyn Adams called for the ball in the low post. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in the low post where she made layups.

South Carolina called a timeout with 13 minutes left in the first half. The score was South Carolina 13, Liberty 12.

Liberty attacked the paint as they looked to make layups. The South Carolina defense made it difficult for them to make open shots.

South Carolina worked the ball down the floor and was able to make fast break layups.

There was a media timeout with 10:39 left in the first half. The score was South Carolina 17, Liberty 12.

South Carolina’s Alaina Coates battled for rebounds and was able to come up with them and make layups. If she didn’t think that she could make a shot Coates wasn’t afraid to pass the ball to her teammates.

Liberty had difficulty scoring midway through the first half. They turned the ball over and South Carolina was able to make layups off the turnovers.

There was a media timeout with 7:32 left in the first half. The score was South Carolina 27, Liberty 14.

South Carolina’s Tina Roy was able to handle the Liberty defense as she brought the ball down the floor. Roy was also able to drive to the basket and make layups. If the lane was too clogged up Roy wasn’t afraid to shoot mid-range jump shots which she was able to make.

South Carolina’s Aleighsa Welch was able to get rebounds and get the ball to her teammates to start the offense.

Liberty played mostly zone defense in the first half. South Carolina was able to pick apart the zone defense and get to the basket for shots.

There was a media timeout with 3:21 left in the first half. The score was South Carolina 37, Liberty 18.

South Carolina was able to come up with steals and get the ball inside to Elem Ibiam who made layups in the low post.

Liberty’s Karly Buer and Simone Brown were able to make jump shots in the offense. The other
Liberty players were able to get the ball into Buer and Browns hands throughout the first half.

At halftime the score was South Carolina 44, Liberty 20.  

As the second half got underway South Carolina continued to push the ball down the floor and make layups in transition.

South Carolina used mostly zone defense early. They switched up between man-to-man and zone in the first half. There defensive pressure gave Liberty fits the whole game.

Liberty’s Ashley Rininger attacked the basket and looked to shoot layups and mid-range jump shots. She had difficulty shooting the ball.

There was a media timeout with 15:47 left in regulation. The score was South Carolina 51, Liberty 24.

Rininger came up with layups in the second half. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in the paint.

Mitchell continued to come off screens for layups in the second half.

Liberty struggled to shoot through the first half of the second half. They attacked the basket but they were not able to get their shots to fall on a consistent basis.

There was a media timeout with 11:45 left in the regulation. The score was South Carolina 59, Liberty 36.

Coates continued to make layups. She wasn’t afraid of the defense. Coates was able to get to the line
and make free throws.

South Carolina didn’t back down on the defensive end. They kept applying pressure and making it challenging for Liberty to shoot the ball.

Everyone touched the ball for South Carolina. They communicated well throughout the game.

There was a media timeout with 7:47 left in regulation. The score was South Carolina 74, Liberty 36.

South Carolina’s Bianca Cuevas did a good job of bringing the ball down the floor. She was able to come up with layups in transition. Cuevas was also able to communicate well with her teammates as she told them where they were supposed to be on the floor and what plays she wanted to run.

There was a media timeout with 3:53 left in regulation. The score was South Carolina 82, Liberty 42.

Liberty had a tough time making shots. They were not able to get their offense going throughout the game.

South Carolina came away with the 84-44 victory over Liberty.

The leading scorers for Liberty were Brown with 12 points and Rininger and Buer each with 10 points.

The leading scorers for South Carolina were Wilson with 17 points, Welch with 15 points, and Mitchell with 14 points.

After the game Wilson and South Carolina’s head coach Dawn Staley talked about the game.
