Esko and Fairmont went up against each other in the class 2A semifinals of the state basketball tournament. It took a while for each team to get a feel for what the other team was doing on each side of the ball.
The score went back and forth throughout the opening minutes.
There was a media timeout with 14:42 left in the first half. The score was Esko 6, Fairmont 4.
Both teams used a lot of time off the clock on the offensive end.
Esko’s Aaron Olson and Casey Staniger were able to come up with layups and jump shots throughout the first half.
There was a media timeout with 10:50 left in the first half. The score was Fairmont 10, Esko 8.
Esko’s Aaron Olson, Kory Deadrick and Casey Staniger were all over the offensive end. They were able to hit jump shots in the first half.
There was a media timeout with 3:58 left in the first half. The score was Fairmont 22, Esko 15.
Esko did a good job of getting to the basket and making layups late in the second half. Esko’s Jaxson Turner did a good job of running the offense.
At halftime the score was Fairmount 27, Esko 23.
As the second half got underway Esko came out looked to attack the basket and they also looked to the deep three-point shot.
Deadrick came up with some deep three-point shots early.
There was a media timeout with 14:53 left in regulation. The score was tied at 32.
Esko swung the ball around the three-point line as Fairmount went to a zone defense. Esko ran their sets against the zone defense.
Staniger stepped up and was able to hit three-point shots consistently in the second half.
Fairmount called a timeout with 11:08 left in regulation. The score was Esko 38, Fairmount 32.
Esko was able to get everyone involved in the offense. They did a good job of communicating with
everyone on the floor.
There was a timeout on the floor with 6:03 left in regulation. The score was Esko 45, Fairmont 40.
Neither team went on a major run in the contest. Both teams went on a major run in the game.
Esko’s Jaxson Turner did a good job of getting his teammates the ball in spots where they could shoot it. He also did a good job on the defensive end and creating havoc.
Esko called a timeout with 2:07 left in regulation. The score was Esko 48, Fairmount 43.
Esko came out of fire in the second half. They did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense.
In a hard fought game Esko came away with the 56-43 victory over Fairmont.
The leading scorers for Fairmont were Eversman with 15 points and Ruen with 10 points.
The leading scorers for Esko were Deadrik with 21 points and Staniger with 18 points.
After the game I was able to talk to Esko’s Deadrick, Staniger and Turner about the game. I was also able to talk to Esko’s head coach Mike Devney about the game.
