On March 1 Minnesota West and Northland Community and Technical College went up against each other in a mens basketball game. Minnesota West looked to push the ball down the floor and get baskets in transition.
The score went back and forth early in the contest. It took a while for each team to get into an offensive shooting rhythm.
Northland got baskets in transition. Northland’s Tate Mosher was all over the floor on the offensive end. He was able to hit mid-range jump shots throughout the first half.
Northland called a timeout with 11:34 left in the first half. The score was Minnesota West 23, Northland 17.
Northland’s Caprice Barksdale came up with some nice steals and was able to make layups. On the defensive end Barksdale was able to slow down the guy he was guarding.
Both teams dove on the floor for loose balls. There were many jump balls.
Minnesota West strung some baskets together late in the first half. Northland went into a scoring drought with just under 7:00 left in the first half.
At halftime the score was Minnesota West 48, Northland 34.
Northland’s Tate Mosher and Yonathon Kristos both were able to step up and were able to come up with some nice mid-range jump shots. There teammates did a good job of getting them the ball where they felt comfortable shooting it from the elbow. Teammates Nate Moser and Shakil Lea also came up with some nice baskets early in the second half.
Minnesota West was a little quicker than Northland to start the second half. Minnesota West used their quickness to score layups in transition.
Northland went scoreless for a period of time to open the second half. They had multiple turnovers
and Minnesota West took advantage of that.
Minnesota West continued to hit their shots down the stretch. Cody Harris came up with some big mid-range jump shots in the second half. The Northland defenders couldn’t slow him down.
Northland guard Marcus Kirk was all over the floor. He took the ball hard to the basket and was able to come up with layups.
Minnesota West called a timeout with 5:26 left in regulation. The score was Minnesota West 79, Northland 62.
Minnesota West continued to attack the basket. They also were able to take a lot of time off the clock as they looked to shoot with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock.
Minnesota West came away with the 89-68 victory over Northland. As a team Minnesota West shot 28-59 from the field. That included going 10-19 from behind the three-point line. They shot 23-27 from the free throw line. They brought down a total of 45 rebounds 35 of them on the defensive end. Minnesota West was lead in scoring by Harris with 27 points, Seizinger, Buysse and Fisher each had 12 points.
As a team Northland shot 28-63 from the field. That included going 6-21 from behind the three-point line. They shot 6-15 from the free throw line. They brought down a total of 25 rebounds 19 of them on the defensive end. Northland was lead in scoring by Lea with 24 points, Mosher with 14 points and Kristos with 11 points.
