St. Paul Johnson high school was the site of the Twin Cities Boys Basketball Championship series. In the first game the freshman squads from Minneapolis Roosevelt and St. Paul Central went up against each other.
Central looked to get the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.
It took a while for each team get into an offensive rhythm.
Central used a full court press. They were able to frustrate Roosevelt on the offensive end.
There were several ties and lead changes throughout the first half.
Roosevelt was able to score baskets in transition.
Central wasn’t able to score for a period of time in the first half. Roosevelt took advantage of that as they turned up the defensive pressure and they caused turnovers. Roosevelt was able to score off the turnovers.
Roosevelt looked to be a little quicker than Central. Roosevelt used their quickness to their advantage as they came up with steals and was able to get to the basket.
Central stepped up late in the first half. They were able to knock down mid-range jump shots to stay in the game.
At halftime the score was Roosevelt 42, Central 39.
Central’s Re’Twan Balenger was all over the floor. He stepped up and was able to knock down mid-range jump shots.
Roosevelt took their time on the offensive end. They passed the ball around the three-point line and made Central have to defend them.
The score went back and forth throughout the second half. Neither team went on a run. The defensive pressure made it difficult for either team to hit shots.
Central continued to come up with layups in the second half.
Neither team went on a run in the second half.
Roosevelt’s Reggie Rogers stepped up and was able to hit some key three-point shots in the second half.
Central called a timeout with 7:38 left in regulation. The score was Roosevelt 60, Central 58.
Roosevelt continued to look to score baskets in transition.
Central used a full court trap and was able to create steals. Roosevelt had a hard time with trap.
Central was not able to come up with baskets late in the game. Roosevelt took advantage of that as they came up with mid-range jump shots.
Roosevelt came away with the 83-75 victory over Central.
The leading scorers for Central was Balenger with 18 points.
The leading scorer for Roosevelt was Baial Rainey with 18 points.
