NORTHLAND TOOK ON ROCHESTER IN A MENS BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 28 Northland Community and Technical College went up against Rochester Community and Technical College in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference state tournament.  
 
It took a while for each team to get into an offensive shooting rhythm. The score went back and forth in the opening minutes of the game. Each team was trying to figure out what the other was doing offensively so as they wanted to combat that on the defensive end.
 
Rochester looked to get the ball into the hands of Chuck Robinson. Robinson wasn’t afraid to take the ball to the basket. He looked to get layups.
 
There were many ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.
 
Northland’s Tate Mosher got hot from behind the three-point line. He was able to knock down shots.
 
Rochester called a timeout with 15:16 left in the first half. The score was Northland 12, Rochester 7.
 
Northland was able to make layups in transition.
 
Rochester looked to trap Northland as they looked to make them turn it over. Northland was able to get out of the trap and get looks at the basket.
 
The score went back and forth midway through the first half. Both teams looked to be relaxed as they each played a high tempo style of play.
 
Rochester was a deeper team. They substituted frequently.
 
Northland called a timeout with 10:10 left in the first half. The score was tied at 18.
 
Northland did a good job of getting the ball into the hands of Yonathon Kristos and Mosher, they were able to get to the basket and knock down mid-range jump shots.
 
Rochester’s Jumarhi Turner came up with some deep three-point baskets that gave his team the lead.
 
Northland called a timeout with 6:58 left in the first half. The score was Rochester 28, Northland 22.
 
Robinson continued to hit shots late the first half. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball on the low block where he took it hard to the basket on layups.
 
The Northland offense went stagnant late in the half. They couldn’t get anything going offensively.
 
At halftime the score was Rochester 39, Northland 30.
 
Both teams attacked the basket to start the second half. Rochester seemed to be more vocal starting the second half.
 
Rochester’s Rico Gunn got hot from behind the three-point line. He stepped up and knocked down deep three-point baskets.
 
Northland continued to struggle shooting the ball in the second half. Even though they struggled to shoot it, they still shot the ball.
 
Rochester’s Rob ClayPool came up with jump shots and layups in the second half. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball on the wing where he took most of his shots.
 
Northland called a timeout with 7:56 left in regulation. The score was Rochester 66, Northland 57.
 
Northland’s Turner went down with a knee injury with 6:53 left in regulation. He was helped off the floor.
 
The play was very physical. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls. There were many jump balls.
 
Rochester called a timeout with 2:02 left in regulation. The score was Rochester 81, Northland 62.
 
Both teams played hard and didn’t give up. However Rochester came away with the 85-65 victory over Northland.
 
As a team Northland shot 24-51 from the field. That included going 6-19 from behind the three-point line. Northland brought down a total of 21 rebounds 25 of them on the defensive end. They also shot 11-15 from the free throw line. They were lead in scoring by Kristos with 18 points, Hunter with 16 points and Mosher with 14 points.
 
Rochester shot 33-67 from the field. That included going 7-17 from behind the three-point line. Rochester brought down a total of 37 rebounds 21 of them on the defensive end. They shot 12-18 from the free throw line. They were lead in scoring by Robinson with 21 points and Claypool with 17 points.
